Pandora Vs. LastFM
Does anyone else think pandora radio is actually better than last.fm?
VS
I vote Last.FM.
I think Last.FM plays/guesses better music than Pandora. Pandora and Last.fm are two totally different systems. Pandora creates its stations based on some complex musical algorithms which makes all of the songs seem to ‘flow’, e.g. if you start with a quiet acoustic/orchestral track, you’ll get a bunch more quiet acoustic/orchestral tracks after that. The idea being, if you like that ’sound’ then you’ll like a whole station full of that sound. Trouble is, just because a song has a similar “musical footprint” to a previous track, doesn’t mean I’m instantly going to like it.
Last.fm’s algorithms are based on the user community itself. If you’re listening to an artist’s radio station, it’ll look at all the previous listeners to that artist, work out what else those people listen to, and play you those similar artists. Although the stations don’t necessarily ‘flow’ as well as the Pandora ones, I’ve certainly discovered more new artists at Last.fm, because the tracks are pre-screened against other people with similar tastes to me.
Also, (like Pandora) Last.fm will tailor its stations based on your listening history. You’ve only played 22 tracks so far, so when you select “play me a new station”, Last.fm doesn’t have much to go on. If the radio plays you songs you don’t like, ban them; once you’ve banned a few songs by an artist, that artist will never play again.
One last thing, Pandora made a huge mistake trying to charge for listening and lost a big chunk of their audience. So big, the President sent out an email apologizing for the charges.

Customized e commerce website design
Customized e commerce website design is required for success of the commercial sites. It is very important to draw potential customers to your websites. It is also necessary to hold back the visitors to your site so that they come back the next time they purchase similar kind of products/services.
Since there are numerous sites on the web the visitors will tend to move to a different site if your site can not provide the relevant products they are looking for. The site visitors can also choose to move to other sites for another very common reason. Your website might be stuffed with information but if it is not designed properly, a visitor may not waste his precious time for that particular website.
Here are some e-commerce website design tips:
- Fast Loading Web Pages: If the web pages of your e commerce site take too much time to load then the online visitors will get impatient and can move to another website. Try to avoid adding unnecessary web content to the site so that it does not take more time to load than usual.
- Interactive Site: Interactivity is always welcome. You can add interactive features in your web design so that visitors feel interested to participate in several quizzes, polls and in submitting feedbacks.
- User Friendly Buying Procedures: The buyers will not appreciate long transaction processes. Security is also necessary for shopping at the e commerce sites. The whole process should be made user friendly so that no time is wasted in the process of ordering products from your site.
- Avoid Unnecessary Form Fill Ups: Most of the times it is seen that a customer loses all interest of buying products from an e commerce site as he/she has to fill up a long form just before placing the orders. But this is not accepted as a very sound strategy. Many e commerce sites prefer collecting lots of information from customers but this can often prove tiresome for the visitor and a loss of a sale for the company!
- Convenient Search Option: Online buyers love to search around the e commerce site to find their required products. The website design of your site should support proper categorization of the products so that buyers can easily find them.
Besides providing latest and huge range of products for sale on your e commerce site, it is also important to get a proper e-commerce website design for effective business.
Graphic Design and the Web
Graphic design expresses the creativity of the website’s brand and increases its professional look. You need the best services of a corporate graphic design company, if you are starting a project from scratch, or even planning to redesign an existing website. Most corporate graphic designers offer flash multimedia design, logo & graphic design, and web hosting. Some assure extended services, including domain registration and other marketing strategies.
Before choosing a professional graphic design company, it is very important to understand the different aspects of web color. In general, there are two types of colors used in web graphics: RGB and CMYK. These colors determine the background page elements and photographs. RGB and CMYK colors are generally associated with GIF and JPEG graphic file formats.
Graphic designers use web colors for web page backgrounds, HTML text, table and layer backgrounds, web links, GIF and JPEG files. Most designers employ web safe palette (Web 216 palette) in all computer graphics, web development applications and multimedia. These graphic designers use the following rules:
Flat graphics employing web 216 palettes are saved as GIF files;
Photographs and full color images employing RGB palette are saved as JPEG.
Moreover, a standard web page should be of 600×800, 620×480 or 1024×768 pixels. These important factors make a website look professional and attractive. A professional graphic design firm follows these rules and displays samples, both printed and online, in its portfolio. Always look for portfolios with diverse samples. Also, ensure that the portfolio boasts quality graphics and not poor quality images or basic clip art graphics.
A corporate graphic design company should have a proper background or reference. If you are looking to have a long term project from your graphic designer, check the company’s project report card. Make sure the graphic design company has any long term repeat clients and is not a startup company. Hence, determine whether a corporate graphic design company suits your business!

Twas the Night Before Crunch Time
Update on an Old Poem
Here’s a variation of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” especially written for all of you graphic designers and web designers. Have a safe holiday and may all your designs come true!
Twas the Night Before Crunch Time
By Frank Ling aka “admin”
Twas the night before crunch time, when all through the house
Not a designer was stirring, not even a wireless mouse.
The graphic files were saved and stored away with care,
In hopes they’d safe till the next day, and still would be there.
The designers were all nestled so snug in their beds,
While visions of deadlines kept dancing in their heads.
But suddenly outside there arose such a clatter,
Did the servers all crash, just what was the matter?
But outside there appeared the delivery man so lively and quick,
I knew right away that it must be my Cintiq!
I opened the package and looked right inside,
And there was the graphics tablet so shinny and bright.
Now Maya, now Adobe, now graphics galore,
I can now produce artwork and images and much more!
As I plugged in the tablet to my monitor and PC,
I noticed the delivery man was just about to leave.
He got in his van and gave me a whistle,
Your work never stops, that’s as clear as crystal.
But I heard him shout out as he drove out of sight,
“Happy Graphics to all, and to all a good-night!
Happy Holidays everyone. See you next year!
How a web design goes straight to hell.
